Gambian President cures more HIV patients with his secret herbs

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh said that dozens of HIV/AIDS patients in the tiny West African state have been cured using his secret concoction of boiled herbs.
Jammeh first announced he had found a natural remedy to cure AIDS in 2007, stirring anger among Western medical experts who claimed he was giving false hope to the sick.

"Who am I to expect that everybody would praise me," Jammeh said in a state television broadcast on Sunday evening, announcing that 68 patients had been cured and discharged from a treatment center.

"Just as the Prophet Mohammed prevailed and established Islam (...)I also prevailed to cure HIV/AIDS to the point that 68 are being discharged today," he said.

Lost diaries help solve "young Mona Lisa" mystery

A package of diaries said to have been posted to the United States from Britain in the 1960s could provide a vital clue to the origin of a controversial portrait presented in Geneva last month as Leonardo da Vinci's original "Mona Lisa."

But in a twist typical of the intrigue-prone world of art, the diaries -- notes by early 20th century British connoisseur and collector Hugh Blaker -- disappeared and the Washington address they were sent to seems never to have existed.

"Those papers could well provide the key to pushing back the provenance of this version of the 'Mona Lisa' by at least 150 years," Robert Meyrick, an academic and expert on the largely forgotten Blaker.

And, of course, to helping establish if the so-called "Isleworth" variant of the world's most famous painting in the Paris Louvre could indeed be an earlier -- and priceless -- portrayal by Leonardo of the enigmatic, smiling lady.

Blaker, an unsuccessful painter who as a museum curator and dealer had a reputation for recognizing lost Old Masters, found and bought the "younger Mona Lisa" in 1913 -- in, he later said, a nobleman's country house in Somerset in western England.

Sure it was a real Leonardo, he kept it at his home in the London suburb of Isleworth -- giving it its informal identity tag -- until it passed to his sister Jane on his death in 1936.

But Blaker told no one the name of the country house or of the seller. Meyrick, who was invited to the Geneva presentation to talk about the bachelor connoisseur, is keen to solve that mystery for a biography he plans to write.

Biafra War: Igbo Leaders Deceived Their People →Ofeimun

Poet, literary and social critic Mr Odia Ofeimun has said Biafran war leaders should be sent to the Nuremberg Trial for crime against humanity.

He said those leaders are supposed to be tried for deceiving the Igbos to fight a war they were not prepared for.

Ofeimun said this yesterday at Freedom Park, Lagos while reacting to the controversy stirred by Chinua's Achebe's latest war memoir, There Was A Country.

Ofeimun was a guest at the Book Party organised by The Committee For Relevant Art, CORA.

According to him, "the Igbo leaders who deceived their people to fight the civil war without arms and ammunition should be tried for crimes against humanity. They were not prepared for the war, yet they made use of their propaganda machine to deceive the igbos to fight the war.
They didn't tell their people the true situation of things. Chief Obafemi Awolowo met Odumegwu Ojukwu and told him, 'My friend you are not prepared for the war."
Odia also said Achebe is too serious a writer to be involved in such a controversy., adding that the author of the popular novel, Things Fall Apart, left so many things unsaid in the book.

In his latest book, Achebe claims that former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, retd., and the then Federal Commissioner for Finance, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, used starvation as a weapon of war which caused the death of over two million Igbo people.

Heres an excerpt from the book that has stirred the heated debate:

Groom abducted during wedding

The Kwara State police command have commenced investigation into the abduction of a 35-year- old petrol attendant kidnapped during his wedding and found five days after.

The reason behind the abduction has remained a daunting task for the police and mystery to family
members of the victim.
The spokesman of Kwara State police command, Mr Femi Elubode, said though he had received calls
on the incident, the A Division Police Station at Challenge, Ilorin where the incident was said to
have been reported, had not briefed his office. ”And if we are not officially briefed of any incident,it will be difficult to know the level of investigation,.I have not been briefed yet,” Elubade said.
Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that the two-day wedding preparation between the victim, Zubair Aliyu Balogun, and his heartrob had commenced on Thursday, September 27, only for him to disappear on Friday morning, and his whereabouts remained unknown for five days.
After intensive search by family members, and sympathisers, the groom was found naked by an
Okada rider in a bush at Kangu-Olunlade village Ilorin where he was purportedly dumped by his
abductors early Tuesday morning, October 2, 2012, drenched in the early morning rain and was
shivering.
Zubair, who was said to have begged the Okada rider to call members of his family, was then taken
to a private hospital where he was later traced.
The victim had since been hospitalised.

Contacted, head of Balogun-Fulani family, where the victim hails from, Alhaji Mahmud Durosinlorun Atiku Fulani, said there was no suspicion prior to the abduction, vowing that the family would use all legal and spiritual means to get to the root of the matter and fish out the perpetrators.

Using his own blood, A New York artist paints "Resurrection" exhibit

Many artists claim to put their blood, sweat and tears into their work, but Vincent Castiglia means it: he paints with his own blood.

The New York painter has a new exhibit, "Resurrection," in Manhattan's Soho neighborhood that opened on Thursday and is due to run through October. It features a number of Castiglia's paintings
from the last 10 years, all of which were created with Castiglia's blood.

Castiglia, 30, said in an interview this week that his first experiments with this medium were prompted by a "need to connect with my work on the most intimate level."Human blood contains iron oxide, he explained, a pigment found in many traditional paints, and which occurs naturally in iron ore and common rust.

Boxing Helps Me Express Myself.

Sadiq Ahmed was crowned as the new National Light Welterweight champion after he beat the former champion, Sunday Ajayi, to submission last Monday. In this interview with Boxing In Focus, the 'Policeman' spoke about his boxing career and other issues.

How do you feel about your victory over Sunday Ajayi?
I feel so great because it was a bout that I had been longing to have for a long time. I had always wanted to have a shot at the title right from the time I became a professional boxer. And I am delighted that the dream has come through from the moment I was crowned as the National Wealterweight champion last Monday.
How did you manage to overcome your opponent who was a national champion in just one round?
I had known before the bout that I would definitely beat Sunday Ajayi to submission in that bout. Yet I worked very hard knowing full well that my opponent is a very tricky boxer. That is why I tell anyone who cares to listen that hardwork was the secret of my victory in the fight. My coach happens to be a very disciplined man and he was very thorough with me in the build-up to the fight. Therefore, knocking out my opponent in the first round of the bout was a result of my hardwork. In addition, I did not joke with my training, especially my roadwork.

What is the next line of action now that you have become a national champion?
I don't intend to rest on my oars because there are still bigger titles than the national title. That is why I see this new title as a stepping stone to those bigger ones. But my plan at the moment is to take a shot at the African title. I know that I am bound to face more challenges in my quest to win African and world titles than I faced in the national title. That is why I like to take them one after the other so that I will not lose focus.

Why did you choose boxing as your career?
The reason I prefer boxing to any other sport is because it is an individual sport. It gives me the opportunity to express myself unlike a team sport where your success will depend on the performance of your team-mates. But I have come to accept the fact that my destiny is in my own hand as far as boxing is concerned. Having this at the back of my mind has really helped me a lot since I have taken the sport as a career.

Being an Olympian, why do you think Nigerian boxers failed at the London Olympics?
What I want people to realise is that Nigerian boxers did not fail at the London Olympics because they
were not good. But what really caused their poor showing in London was because their preparation for
the games was very bad. In fact, it would have been a miracle if the boxers had come home with a single medal. Aside from the fact that the boxers only had a couple of months to prepare for the games, the camping system itself was nothing to write home about. There were no modern equipment in the camp and the few ones that were available were not in good condition.

What is your advice to upcoming boxers?
My advice to them is that they should remain focused and know what they are doing. They should have it at the back of their mind that Rome was not built in a day. That is why I always tell them to be patient and work very hard. Their time will surely come if only they are ready to carry out the instructions of their coaches.

With the help of the security operatives in the bank, the man was held until some military men on patrol in Owerri got to the bank.

N351m worth of Drugs hidden in Balls

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday impounded three consignments of heroin hidden inside balls and woollen carpets at the Nigerian Aviation Handling
Company (NAHCO) Shed, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos worth N351million.

The consignments of drug, imported from Pakistan, were detected through the help of the agency’s
sniffer dogs weighing a total of 29.260 kilogrammes.

The rug consignment containing 14 kilogrammes of heroine came as cargo on KLM flight while the
other two consignments of balls weighing 10.230 kilogrammes and 5.030 kilogrammes were imported on Saudi Arabia Airline. Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, vowed to incapacitate drug trafficking syndicates in the country through counter measures.

“Every drug seizure is important to us because of the value of the drugs and the fact that every
seizure made advances the anti-drug campaign.
This seizure is important to the country because the damage the drug would have caused cannot be
quantified. Drug trafficking cartels may be sophisticated in drug concealment, but the seizures
are indicators of Nigeria’s counter efforts. We will not relent in protecting the country from the activities of drug traffickers”, Giade stressed.

According to Giade, investigation is on-going to unravel the cartel behind the shipments of narcotics.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, pointed out that the goods were abandoned by the importers as soon as they arrived the airport, adding that the officials of the agency
had to tear the consignment to uncover the drugs.

“The drug was factory packed in the cartons containing the balls. The rug concealment was also
factory packed because we had to tear and unfasten to recover the drugs. Four rugs were found to
contain heroin. So far, no arrest has been made but the cases are under investigation” Hamza explained.

EFCC Officials Sentenced To 5 Years Imprisonment For Bribery.

They were said to have allegedly demanded for N100, 000 from Kullima Kachalla, a former Chairman of Bama Local Government in Borno state in 2010, by posing as investigators of the EFCC.

They were alleged to have asked Mr. Kachalla to send them the money in order to bribe other investigators of the Commission to destroy a petition written to the EFCC, which indicted him (the former chairman) for alleged mismanagement of public funds.

During trial, the court was told that Mr. Kachalla had alerted the EFCC of the action of the two accused persons, necessitating an undercover operation, where an EFCC officer, posing as Mr. Kachalla’s representative, arranged a meeting with the accused.

Ishaku, second accused, allegedly called Mr. Kachalla by telephone, asking him to bring the money to the Commission’s office in Wuse, Abuja. It was in the course of the receipt of the money that the two staff were arrested and subsequently arraigned.

In his ruling, Justice Umar said because the convicts have suffered enough humiliation, their sentence should start from the date of their arraignment being October 18, 2010

The boy (names withheld) had been on trial following charges by his father that he had raped his wife for nearly two years under persistent threats.
